For Mary Emrich 1905-1999

Jane's style marries dynamic vocals and plush harmonies with surprising lyrics. Her songs use alternative guitar tunings that pick up where Joni Mitchell left off.

The CD's title means "The Mermaid" in Greek. The record is named for an oral Greek myth about Alexander The Great's sister. I gorgona (pronounced "ee gore-GO-nuh") was recorded at OTR studios with producer Cookie Marenco. Cookie, a former A & R executive with Windham Hill, received five grammy nominations for record production, a gold record, and has worked with artists from Kristen Hersh and Mary Chapin Carpenter to Max Roach. i gorgona features players like Joe Gore (pj harvey), Jim Campilongo (The Little Willies), and Scott Amendola (Madeliene Peyroux; The Nels Cline Singers).

Reviews

I Gorgona recalls genre stretching collaborations between Los Angeles producer Jon Brion and adult alternative singer/songwriters Aimee Mann and Fiona Apple, with a bit of the quirky attitude of Swedish pop sensation Maia Hirasawa and anti-folk alumna Regina Spektor. Produced by Blue Coast founder Cookie Marenco, whose sonic precision is turning the San Francisco Bay Area into an mecca for aurally-conscious artists, I Gorgona is a masterpiece of evocative imagery, beautiful chords, unexpected rhythms and fascinating sounds. Singer Jane Selkye and acoustic bassist Chris Kee are mainstays of the increasingly influential Blue Coast family of artists, while the often brilliant drumming of Scott Amendola proves, once again, why he is one of the bay area's most in-demand players. My favorites: Thin Atmosphere, Every Seven Years and I Saw Her Tatoo.
